Arizona State's James Brooks blocked two crucial extra points to help the Sun Devils stun No. 23 Arizona 30-29 in double overtime, Thursday in Tucson, Ariz.
The host Wildcats had a chance to win it in regulation, but Brooks leaped high to block Alex Zendejas' potential winning extra point with 27 second left.
After Arizona (7-5, 4-5 Pac-10) answered an Arizona State touchdown in the second overtime, Brooks repeated the feat, blocking another Zendejas extra point to give the Sun Devils an improbable victory.
Even with the win, Arizona State (6-6, 4-5 Pac-10) is unlikely to earn a bowl berth. Two of the Sun Devils' six wins have come against Football Championship Subdivision competition, meaning they'll need a special waiver from the NCAA to qualify for a bowl.
The loss is Arizona's fourth straight and will take a toll on the Wildcats' bowl travel plans, which, before the defeat, seemed destined for the Alamo Bowl.
The Sun Devils led 6-0, after a sluggish first half between the Pac-10's top two passing offenses.
Arizona quarterback Nick Foles got things going in the third quarter, hooking up with Juron Griner on two long touchdown passes to give the Wildcats a 14-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Arizona State quarterback Brock Osweiler rallied the Sun Devils and put his team back ahead with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Mike Willie and successful two-point conversion with 7:09 to play. Thomas Weber's fourth field goal extended the Sun Devil lead to 20-14 with three minutes left.
Foles then led a dramatic two-minute drive and tied the score with a 5-yard
touchdown pass to David Douglas with 27 seconds left in regulation, before Brooks blocked his first extra point.
Foles and Douglas hooked up again in the second overtime, before Brooks blocked what would have been the tying extra point.
Cameron Marshall scored on a 3-yard touchdown run in the second overtime for Arizona State.
