In about a one-month span, Connecticut has gone from a football team looking at a lost season to one that’s in position for a BCS bowl berth.

The Huskies rolled to a 38-17 win over Cincinnati on Saturday at Rentschler Field, moving them within one victory of clinching the Big East’s automatic bid in the BCS. Such a scenario seemed unlikely after the Huskies lost 26-0 at Louisville on Oct. 23 to fall to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play. But they have rallied to win four straight, and play at South Florida next week with a BCS bowl bid on the line. Connecticut (7-4) would be the BCS qualifier if it finishes 5-2 in the Big East because it holds all tiebreakers over West Virginia and Pittsburgh.

Behind the tough running of Jordan Todman and a defense that took advantage of four Bearcats turnovers, the Huskies turned a tight game into a blowout in the fourth quarter. Todman ran for 175 yards on 31 carries and three touchdowns.

Zach Collaros ran for a 3-yard touchdown midway through the third to pull the Bearcats within 24-17, but Todman took over from there. Todman scored on runs of 1 and 9 yards as the Huskies took advantage of an interception by Blidi Wreh-wilson and extended their lead to 38-17.

The Huskies took advantage of two Cincinnati (4-7, 2-4) turnovers to take a 24-10 halftime lead. Todman had 74 yards on 11 carries in the first half. He scored from 1 yard out just before halftime to send Connecticut into the locker room with a two-touchdown lead.
