Virginia’s history of November swoons added a new chapter on Saturday when the Cavaliers fell short in their comeback at Duke and succumbed in a wild 55-48 affair at Wallace Wade Stadium.
Desmond Scott accounted for the game-winner, darting in from 35 yards out with 35 seconds left as the Blue Devils sent the stunned Cavaliers to their 11th consecutive loss in the month of November, dating back to 2007.
UVA had trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half and by 12 with a little more than six minutes left before Keith Payne scored the last of his two touchdowns to give the visitors a 48-47 advantage with 2:26 left.
The ‘Hoos (4-5, 1-4 ACC) out-gained their hosts, 641-488, but were undone by three costly turnovers, all of which were interceptions thrown by quarterback Marc Verica. Duke (3-6, 1-4 ACC) turned the ball over just once in beating the Cavs for the third consecutive time.
The Cavaliers trailed 21-7 at the end of the first period before Verica accounted for two of his career-high four touchdowns to help the visitors forge their first lead of the game at 28-24 with a little more than 10 minutes remaining in the third period.
The mistake-prone Verica completed 24-of-46 passes for a career-best 416 yards.
