Senior guard Chase Fischer scored 24 points, leading second-seeded BYU to an 80-77 victory over third-seeded Virginia Tech in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament on Friday night at the Marriott Center in Provo, Utah.

Kyle Collinsworth had 18 points and 10 rebounds for BYU (25-10), which will play Wagner or Creighton in the quarterfinals. Freshman Zac Seljaas scored 11 points, and freshman Nick Emery had 10.

Seth Allen scored 22 points for Virginia Tech (20-15), and Zach LeDay had 17 points and 14 rebounds.

BYU raced out to a 7-0 lead and later went up 17-9. Virginia Tech trailed 20-11 before mounting a 13-4 run to tie the game on a jumper by LeDay. The teams traded leads over the final 5:22, but the Cougars led 38-34 at the break.

BYU maintained a slight lead until Virginia Tech tied the game with 13:46 to go. They exchanged leads several times until Fischer made a 3-pointer to put BYU up 75-73 with 4:20 to play. The Hokies had a chance to tie the game in the final minute, but Allen missed a layup with 29 seconds remaining.
