Guard Ahmad Carver had 15 points and Old Dominion overcame a furious St. John's comeback effort to earn a 63-55 victory and take seventh place in the Battle 4 Atlantis on Friday.

The Monarchs, coming off a pair of six-point losses to Louisville and Louisiana State, broke open a close game early in the second half and led 51-35 with just over eight minutes to play. St. John’s looked like a team without much depth playing its third game in three days, but found a second wind late to make things interesting.

A 15-2 run cut the ODU lead to 53-50 on a Marcus LoVett three-pointer with 1:29 left. But the Red Storm could get no closer, and Old Dominion hit its free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Forward Denzell Taylor just missed a double-double with nine points and 17 rebounds for ODU. He had nine of the team’s 25 offensive rebounds, critical on a night when the Monarchs shot just 31.3 percent from the floor (20-for-64). Forward Trey Porter had 12 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots off the bench.

LoVett scored 16 for the Red Storm, which lost its fourth game in a row. It opened the Battle 4 Atlantis with losses to Michigan State and Virginia Commonwealth. Guard Shamorie Ponds added 10 points, but went 3-for-12 from the field and missed all seven of his attempts from three-point range.

Old Dominion led 30-24 at the half.
