Senior guard Davon Reed scored 17 points, including four free throws in the closing seconds, and had three steals as Miami outlasted George Washington 72-64 on Thursday night at the Watsco Center in Coral Gables, Fla.

Reed went over the 1,000-point mark for his career (1,004) and the Hurricanes (9-2) also got a double-double from freshman guard Bruce Brown (14 points, 12 rebounds) and 14 points from junior guard Ja'Quan Newton. They improved to 7-0 at home this season and have won 20 in a row at the Watsco Center since a 78-77 loss to Northeastern on Nov. 27, 2015.

Guard Yuta Watanabe led the Colonials (8-5) with 15 points in his first game back after sitting out the previous seven outings with a calf injury. Guard Tyler Cavanaugh added 13 for George Washington.

Both teams experience significant runs/droughts in a first half that ended with the Miami holding a 38-30 lead.

The Hurricanes went on a 15-0 run to build a 28-8 cushion just past the midpoint of the period as the Colonials went scoreless for more than five minutes. Reed had three 3-pointers and guard Dejan Vasiljevic two to fuel the surge.

With Miami up 32-10, the Colonials countered with a 17-0 run that cut their deficit to 32-27 just over five minutes before halftime as Watanabe canned a pair of 3-pointers and a two-point jumper to the run.

Miami's dry spell lasted 5:01 before Brown followed up his own miss to end it. Watanabe countered with yet another triple to get Miami's lead down to 34-30 before Newton scored the final four points of the period.

George Washington managed a 40-40 tie early in the second half but never got a lead. Miami jumped out to a 53-45 advantage, but saw that cut to 55-53 before closing it out.
