Michael Young scored 20 points and Jamel Artis added 17 points as Pitt led wire to wire in a 76-63 win over Morehead State on Friday at the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh.

The Eagles (2-2) were without head coach Sean Woods, who was suspended with pay earlier in the week while the school completes an investigation into complaints filed by players who complained of mistreatment.

Morehead State named assistant coach Preston Spradlin to serve as interim head coach. But it didn't matter who coached against Pitt.

The Panthers (5-1) opened a 9-2 lead in the first four minutes and dominated the Eagles in all facets of the game. By the time Morehead State reached double figures on a DeJuan Marrero layup, more than half of the first half had been played and Pitt led by nine at 20-11.

Another Marrero's layup made it 23-15, but any thought the Eagles had of pulling off the upset ended quickly when Pitt opened a 16-point lead at 37-21 on Ryan Luther's 3-point jumper.

The Panthers' halftime lead was by the same margin, 42-26. The Eagles were more competitive in the second half as they outscored the Panthers 37-34.

Marrero led Morehead State with 18 points. He also pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds, collected two assists and had a steal. Malik Maitland contributed 16 point and Xavier Moon added 15. Moon struggled from the field, going 5 of 17.

Cameron Johnson connected on 4 of 7 from beyond the arc and tossed in 16 points for the Panthers, whose bench outscored the Eagles' bench 19-9.

The Panthers also dominated from 3-point range, hitting 11 of 19 (57.9 percent) compared with the Eagles's 7 of 26 (26.9 percent).

Morehead State had an advantage on the offensive boards (15-12) but was unable to convert many of those opportunities.
