Maik Kotsar added 15 points and Chris Silva 11 for the Gamecocks (3-0).

South Carolina jumped out to an early lead as PJ Dozier hit consecutive 3-pointers to provide a 31-13 lead with eight minutes remaining in the first half. The Gamecocks continued to pull away. Seven straight points from Thornwell increased the margin to 40-18 with 4:38 left in the half.

Thornwell stayed hot and another 3-pointer provided a 45-23 lead with 1:20 remaining. South Carolina State shot just 32 percent from the field and trailed 50-25 at the break.

The Gamecocks continued to dominate in the second half and a 3-pointer by Eaves increased the margin to 60-33 with 16:11 left.

South Carolina State could not close the gap despite boosting the pressure. Thornwell hit a jumper and the Gamecocks increased the lead to 68-39.
