San Diego State rallied from a big deficit to hand No. 14 Cal its first loss of the season, beating the Bears 72-58 late Thursday night in the Las Vegas Invitational at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.

Junior guard Winston Shepard and senior forward Skylar Spencer came off the bench to score 15 points apiece for San Diego State (4-2), which outscored Cal 40-13 over the final 16:57. Freshman guard Jeremy Hemsley scored 14 points, and freshman forward Zylan Cheatham had 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Freshman forward Ivan Rabb had 18 points and nine rebounds for Cal (4-1). Senior guard Tyrone Wallace scored 16 points, and junior guard Jordan Mathews had 10.

Cal was clinging to a 24-22 lead when Rabb scored to spark an 8-2 run that put the Bears up 34-26 with 4:14 remaining in the first half. Cal held a 36-28 advantage at the break and started the second half with a 9-2 run to take a 45-30 lead on a jumper by Mathews with 17:24 to go.

San Diego responded with a 14-0 run to cut the deficit to one on a 3-pointer by Shepard with 12:02 to play. Shepard scored again moments later to give the Aztecs a 50-48 lead. A subsequent 14-3 run put San Diego State up 64-53 with 2:09 remaining.
