Guard Trelun Banks scored six straight points in a 1:54 span of the second half, snapping a 61-61 tie and Southern went on to a 76-72 nonconference road win over Mississippi State in Starkville, Miss.

The Jaguars (1-1) and Bulldogs were tied when Banks hit two free throws, a layup and a jumper allowing Southern to walk away with a big win for a SWAC team over an SEC opponent -- on the road.

Banks finished with 18 points and four assists, fellow guard Adrian Rodgers scored 16 points and grabbed four rebounds and forward Sam Jarred chipped in with 10 points and eight boards.

The Jaguars went 6 of 14 from 3-point range, with Rodgers' 4 of 6 representing the bulk of the long distance shooting.

Guard Craig Sword led the Bulldogs, who rallied from 10 points down in each half to defeat Eastern Washington in their opener, with 16 points, while forwards Gavin Ware and Travis Daniels had 13 and nine points, respectively. Daniels added 10 rebounds.

The Bulldogs turned the ball over 17 times and shot just 38.3 percent from the floor -- Southern coming up with 10 steals.

Ware was coming off a career-high 26 points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots in the opener. Guard I.J. Ready, who had 25 points in the opener, was 3 of 13 from the floor and scored nine points on Monday.
