NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Two quick runs, one in the first half, another in the second, showed just how dangerous No. 17 Vanderbilt can be.

The Commodores ran off a 19-0 spurt early in the first half, then scored 16 straight early in the second and cruised to a 98-62 victory over Gardner-Webb at Memorial Gymnasium on Monday evening.

Led by power forward Jeff Roberson's career-high 18 points, the Commodores (2-0) ran away from the Bulldogs (0-2).

Vanderbilt trailed 5-2 early, but shooting guard Riley LaChance's 3-pointer started the first run, which lasted 4:21 and was capped by another 3-pointer from shooting guard Camron Justice.

Gardner-Webb guard Harold McBride (10 points) knocked down a 35-footer at the halftime buzzer, but even so, Vanderbilt took a 46-29 advantage to the locker room, thanks to 56 percent shooting from the field.

Nine Commodores scored in the first half, paced by power forward Luke Kornet's 10.

After halftime, a free throw by center Damian Jones snapped the Bulldogs' 6-0 run and was the first of seven straight successful trips down the floor during the 16-0 surge.

Kornet sprained an ankle near the end of the first half, but Roberson, coming off the bench, picked up the slack with 13 after the break. He also had a game-high eight rebounds.

Forward Tyrell Nelson led Gardner-Webb with 16 points.

LaChance (13 points) and Jones (10) added double figures for Vanderbilt.
