Junior guard Bryce Alford scored 22 points to lead UCLA (0-1), which returns six of its top eight players from a team that reached the Sweet 16 last season. Senior forward Tony Parker had 19 points and 19 rebounds.

UCLA led 34-30 at the break and extended its advantage with an 11-0 run early in the second half. Monmouth later staged its own 11-0 run to take a 61-60 lead with 6:02 to play.

Alford made back-to-back 3-pointers to put UCLA up 70-66, but a layup by Stewart and a 3-pointer by Robinson gave the Hawks a 71-70 lead. The Bruins reclaimed the lead on a 3-pointer by freshman guard Aaron Holiday, but the game went to overtime after the Hawks tied it on two free throws by Stewart with 54 seconds left.

The Bruins maintained a slight lead in the extra session until Stewart made two free throws with 18.9 seconds to play.
