William & Mary converted nearly 52 percent of its field goal attempts Friday night as it opened the college basketball season with an 83-68 upset of North Carolina State at PNC Arena in Raleigh, N.C.

Guard Daniel Dixon led the Tribe with 19 points, while forward Omar Prewitt contributed 17 and forward Terry Tarpey added 11 points. Three other players scored either eight or nine points for W&M, which finished the game at 31-of-60 from the field and sank 9-of-22 3-pointers.

Guard Caleb Martin pumped in a game-high 21 points for the Wolfpack, canning 5-of-10 on 3s. Forward Abdul-Malik Abu added 17 points and six rebounds, while freshman forward Maverick Rowan scored 16 points and point guard Cat Barber tallied 11 despite 4-of-16 shooting.

The Tribe controlled the action throughout. N.C. State led just once, that for 26 seconds in the first half at 3-2 after Martin stroked a 3-pointer. W&M slapped a 25-4 run on the Wolfpack and took a 27-7 advantage on Prewitt's free throw with 12:22 left in the half.

The Tribe took a 51-35 lead to the locker room and built its advantage to 23 points at one point in the second half. N.C. State never drew closer than 12.
