Miami (Fla.) 59, Virginia Tech 49: Sheldon McClellan scored 16 points as the Hurricanes shook off the Hokies’ upset bid in the second round of the ACC tournament in Greensboro, N.C.

Davon Reed added 10 points for sixth-seed Miami (21-11), which advances to face third-seeded and No. 9 ranked Notre Dame in Thursday’s quarterfinals. Tonye Jekiri scored nine points with eight rebounds for the Hurricanes, who have won three in a row and four of their past five.

Adam Smith and Ahmed Hill each scored 10 points to pace 14th-seeded Virginia Tech (11-22), which upended Wake Forest in the first round and was within one point with under six minutes remaining. Christian Beyer added nine points off the bench.

Jalen Hudson’s basket with 8:45 left gave the Hokies a 39-38 lead and Smith brought Virginia Tech within 44-43 with 5:30 to play, but Reed’s 3-pointer on the ensuing possession pushed the Miami lead to four. Two Manu Lecomte free throws extended the Hurricanes’ advantage to 49-43 and after Smith sliced the advantage to four, Deandre Burnett hit a 3 to make it 52-45 with just over two minutes left.

Virginia Tech scored only two points in the final five minutes of the first half as the Hurricanes used four points from Angel Rodriguez and a Reed 3-pointer to take a 25-19 lead at intermission, and James Palmer’s dunk early in the second half extended the Miami advantage to eight points. But Miami missed seven of its next nine shots, and Devin Wilson’s three-point play and Hill’s 3-pointer brought the Hokies within 31-30 with 13:05 left.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Hurricanes, who hit 15-of-25 3-point attempts Saturday in beating the Hokies 82-61, finished 5-of-14 from beyond the arc. … Hudson, who scored a career-best 32 points in the Hokies’ 81-80 opening-round win over Wake Forest, finished with five points. … Rodriguez, who did not play Saturday due to a wrist injury, scored five points in his return.
