Larrier had 15 points off the bench, and the Rams held the visiting Colonials to
five second-half field goals to remain unbeaten in the Atlantic 10.
Reserve JeQuan Lewis added 13 points for VCU
(17-3, 7-0), which notched its 12th straight win. The Rams,
who also received 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds from Mo Alie-Cox, enjoyed
a 47-36 rebound advantage and easily overcame a combined 8-of-25 shooting,
21-point night from leading scorers Treveon Graham, Melvin Johnson and Briante
Weber.
Kethan Savage had 18 points to pace George
Washington (16-5, 6-2), which saw its win streak snapped at four. Joe McDonald
added 11 points, and leading scorer Patricio Garino had nine for the Colonials,
who shot a season-low 26.9 percent from the field, including 1-of-17 from
3-point range, and had 16 turnovers.
After trailing 29-21 at the half, George Washington
pulled to within 31-27 on a pair of Savage free throws with 18:16 to play. VCU,
however, dominated the ensuing six minutes with a 16-2 run to take a 47-29 advantage
with 12 minutes left and led by as many as 29 points down the stretch.
The Colonials jumped out to a 7-2 lead to open
the contest and still were in front 16-14 after a three-point play from Savage with
10:50 to play before intermission. Larrier, however, scored six points down the
stretch as VCU outscored George Washington 15-5 the rest of the half to take the
eight-point lead into the break.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The victory was VCU’s 29th
win in its last 30 home games. … The Rams now have accounted for three of George
Washington’s last 10 losses dating back to last season. … VCU reserve G Doug
Brooks (knee sprain) sat out his second straight game.
