No. 8 Gonzaga 87, BYU 80: Kyle Wiltjer scored 24 points and the visiting Bulldogs blew a 16-point lead before upending the Cougars in the West Coast Conference season opener for both teams.

Kevin Pangos recorded 21 points and seven assists before fouling out with 8.2 seconds remaining for Gonzaga (12-1, 1-0), which won its 19th straight WCC opener. Byron Wesley added 15 points and 10 rebounds while Przemek Karnowski contributed nine points and 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs.

Kyle Collinsworth registered 13 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for his second triple-double of the season for BYU (10-4, 0-1), which had won its last nine WCC home games. Tyler Haws and Anson Winder scored 17 points apiece, but were a combined 9-for-26 from the field – including 0-7 from 3-point range.

Gonzaga raced to a 16-4 lead as BYU missed nine of its first 10 shots from the field and led 31-15 before the Cougars erased at the deficit as Collinsworth's runner from beyond the 3-point line at the halftime buzzer created a 43-43 tie at intermission. BYU maintained its momentum to start the second half and took a six-point lead on Collinsworth's basket with 15:29 left before Pangos scored eight consecutive Bulldogs' points to make it 57-57 with 13:32 remaining.

The lead changed hands five times in the next 4:04 and Winder's jumper tied the game for the final time at 67-67 with 7:56 left before Gonzaga responded with an 8-0 run - highlighted by 3-pointers from Wiltjer and Pangos. Collinsworth and Haws each made a pair of free throws to cut the gap to 80-77 with 2:09 to play, but Wesley's runner in the lane with 1:11 left made it 82-77, and the Bulldogs made 5-of-6 from the free-throw line in the final 38.1 seconds.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Haws recorded his 101st game with 10 or more points, moving into sole possession of third place in BYU history behind Danny Ainge (117) and Jimmer Fredette (106). ... Gonzaga coach Mark Few improved to 16-0 in WCC openers. ... The Cougars were 2-of-13 from 3-point range in the second half.
