Freshman forward Jamel Artis scored a season-high 11 points off the bench for Pittsburgh and matched his season best with seven rebounds but missed an open putback with 10 seconds left that preceded Virginia’s winning basket. Lamar Patterson finished with 10 points but shot 3-for-14 for the Panthers (18-4, 6-3).

Neither team closed well as Pittsburgh made its last field goal with just under seven minutes remaining - a 3-pointer by Cameron Wright that gave the Panthers a 44-41 lead - and they shot 1-for-4 from the free-throw line down the stretch. The Cavaliers went more than eight minutes without a field goal before Brogdon’s winner and missed four free throws in the meantime.

The Panthers went 6 ½ minutes without a basket early in first half but still managed to take a 23-21 lead into the break on Wright’s fast-break layup at the buzzer. Pittsburgh took its biggest lead of the game on two free throws by Patterson to start the second half, but the contest would quickly settle back into a one-possession game for rest of the half.
