Cincinnati 65, Texas 59: Yancy Gates scored 15 points and made a pair of crucial baskets in the final two minutes after Texas stormed back to help the Bearcats survive and advance to the third round.

The sixth-seeded Bearcats (25-10) will face the winner of Friday’s second-round game between Florida State and St. Bonaventure on Sunday. Gates had 10 rebounds and Jaquon Parker scored 13 points for Cincinnati, which never trailed but had to hold off a furious rally from the young Longhorns.

After an awful start to the game, 11th-seeded Texas (20-14) awoke and outscored the Bearcats 33-14 over span of more than 12 minutes to forge a 52-52 tie – the first deadlock of the game – with 3:44 left.

But Gates muscled his way in for a layup and Cashmere Wright drove the lane for a score on Cincinnati’s next possession. After a defensive stop, Gates drilled a 19-footer from the right wing to give the Bearcats a 58-52 advantage with just over a minute to play. Cincinnati then hit five of six free throws to seal it.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Texas’ run of 14 straight NCAA tournament appearances is tied with Gonzaga and Wisconsin for the fourth longest active streak. … The Longhorns, who play six freshmen, went more than 10 minutes without a field goal in the first half and trailed 31-17 at the break.
