Harvard made a statement with its 46-41 upset of No. 20 Florida State on Friday, but it wasn’t pretty.

Although the Crimson prevailed in a winner’s bracket semifinal at the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas, the game saw the two squads equal the NCAA record for fewest points at halftime in the shot clock era. The score was tied at 14-14, matching the NCAA low output of 28 points by Ole Miss and South Carolina on Nov. 8, 2003.

Harvard (5-0, 0-0 Ivy League) advances to take on Central Florida for the inaugural Battle 4 Atlantis title on Saturday. Florida State (5-1, 0-0 ACC) will face No. 4 Connecticut in the third-place game in what was expected to be the tourney final.

Harvard continued its best start since the 2005-06 season despite shooting 27.3 percent from the floor and making only 12 field goals. However, five of those field goals were from 3-point range and Harvard outrebounded Florida State by a 35-26 margin.

The Seminoles were held scoreless for the first 8:26 of the game. Even then, Harvard led just 7-0 when Florida State broke through on Terrance Shannon’s layup.

Offensive opportunities were in very short supply. No one finished in double figures - and with 11:34 to go in the game, Florida State’s Xavier Gibson was the only player on either side with more than one made field goal.

Oliver McNally’s nine points paced Harvard.

Michael Spaer led Florida State with seven points and Seminoles center Bernard James blocked three shots, leaving him two shy of 100 career deflections.
