Myck Kabongo scored 13 points, and Texas used a superb defensive effort to hang on for a 62-55 victory over visiting Iowa State on Tuesday night.

The Longhorns (13-7, 3-4 Big 12) led by as much as 18 in the second half and by double digits for most of the game, but the Cyclones (14-6, 4-3 Big 12) stormed back with a barrage of 3-pointers to make it close.

Texas saw its lead dwindle to 58-55 with 25 seconds left, but J’Covan Brown hit two free throws to seal the win and snap the team’s three-game losing skid.

Even with the last-gasp 3-pointers, Texas held the Big 12’s leading 3-point shooting team to only 5-of-21 from long range.

Brown, who entered as the conference’s leading scorer at 19.2 points per game, finished with only 12 points on 3-of-16 shooting, but the Longhorns’ defense proved to be sufficient.

Royce White notched his sixth double-double of the season with 15 points and 15 rebounds for Iowa State, which split the season series with Texas.

Clint Chapman hit a layup at the buzzer to give Texas a 28-22 halftime lead, and then the Longhorns opened the second half with a 14-4 spurt, taking a 42-26 advantage on Kabongo’s 3-pointer five minutes after the break.

It was Iowa State’s worst scoring effort of the season. The previous low came in a 59-52 victory over Central Michigan on Dec. 18.
