Dorenzo Hudson drilled a late 3-pointer and Virginia Tech produced just enough offense to earn its first ACC win, 47-45, at No. 17 Virginia on Sunday night.

A close game finally went the way of Virginia Tech (12-7, 1-4 ACC), which had been 1-4 in games decided by five points or less.

Both teams struggled for long stretches from the floor, as the Hokies went nearly six minutes in the middle of the second half without a field goal against the nation’s second-best scoring defense. That drought allowed Virginia (15-3, 2-2 ACC) to reclaim a lead with nine minutes left.

Mike Scott finished with 10 points for the Cavaliers, but they needed more from the forward who had averaged 21 points and 11 rebounds in his last three games against their in-state rival. Virginia shot just 32.6 percent for the game and 1 for 14 from 3-point range.

Instead, it was Hudson and Erick Green who took over scoring duties in this matchup. Green finished with a game-high 15 points, including a pair of 3-pointers late in the first half to spark a 10-4 run to give Virginia Tech a 23-19 advantage at the break.

The Hokies were equally strong to close the second half, as Hudson’s 3-pointer from the corner capped an 8-2 run that handed Virginia its first home loss of the season. Hudson finished with 12 points for Virginia Tech, which now carries much-needed momentum into a crucial stretch of conference play.

The Hokies can get back into the ACC race, as they play just one ranked opponent over the next month before a home rematch with Virginia.
