C.J. Leslie had 20 points and 10 rebounds as North Carolina State held off visiting Maryland 79-74 in the ACC opener for both teams.
Scott Wood chipped in with 19 points as the Wolfpack (12-4, 1-0 ACC) won their sixth straight game and snapped a nine-game losing streak against Maryland. Lorenzo Brown added 11 points and Richard Howell had 10 for N.C. State.
Maryland (10-4, 0-1 ACC) crept within 56-53 with 8:09 remaining, but four different N.C. State players contributed to an 11-0 run that gave the Wolfpack breathing room. Wood was 6 of 6 from the free-throw line in the final minutes, extending his streak to 47 straight dating to last season.
Terrell Stoglin had 25 points and Alex Len added 12 points and 11 rebounds for Maryland, which saw its seven-game win streak end. It was the 10th time Stoglin, the ACC’s leading scorer, has scored 20 or more this season.
N.C. State went on a 12-4 run to take a 36-30 halftime lead. Leslie made the final two baskets of the half.
Maryland made five 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes, including two by Stoglin.
