Kris Joseph scored 17 points to lead No. 1 Syracuse to a 73-66 win over Marquette at the Carrier Dome.
Syracuse (14-0) is one of just three undefeated programs in the country and leads the all-time series versus the Golden Eagles 8-4.
Marquette (12-4) fell to 1-8 all-time versus the No. 1 team in the national polls.
Joseph went 4 for 4 from beyond the arc while also doing damage with a thunderous fast-break dunk in the second half. Brandon Triche helped out with 16 points, hitting four 3-pointers.
The Orange grabbed an early lead with a 21-2 run in the first half. The Golden Eagles were ice cold in the opening frame, going more than 11 minutes without a field goal to trail 37-19 at the break.
Marquette coach Buzz Williams made some major adjustments at halftime, sparking his team to a 10-2 run to open the second period. Marquette cut Syracuse’s lead to as low as two points behind its aggressive offense that attacked the Orange’s 2-3 zone and controlled the glass.
Syracuse would weather the storm and hold onto the lead. Dion Waiters blocked an outside shot then chased down the loose ball for a layup to put the Orange up by six with four minutes remaining in the game. Two possessions later, Fab Melo would throw down a two-handed alley-oop from Scoop Jardine to push the lead to eight points.
Marquette was led by Darius Johnson-Odom’s 19 points while Jae Crowder chipped in with 15 points in the loss.
