Freshman Trey Burke exploded for a career-high 27 points as No. 16 Michigan defeated Minnesota 61-56 Sunday at the Crisler Center.

Jordan Morgan added a career-high 12 rebounds for the Wolverines (12-2, 2-0 Big Ten), who improved to 9-0 at home.

Michigan took an eight-point lead late in the first half, but consecutive baskets by Minnesota (12-3, 0-2) cut the deficit in half at the break.

Although the Wolverines increased the advantage to seven points several times and never trailed over the final 20 minutes, the Golden Gophers answered each time and managed to cut the lead to 57-56 with 2:13 remaining.

Following a Minnesota turnover on its next possession, Tim Hardaway Jr. – 1-of-13 up to that point of the game – drained a long jumper with 42 seconds left to increase the lead to three.

The Gophers Rodney Williams missed a 3-point attempt to knot the game on its final possession, allowing Zack Novak to ice the game with a pair of free throws in the final seconds.

Julian Welch and Rodney Williams each scored 11 points to pace the Gophers, who fell to 0-2 on the road.
