Marc Sonnen came off the bench to score 10 of his 12 points in the final five minutes, including a pair of key 3-pointers to ignite a decisive 8-0 run late in the game as Northern Iowa held off Iowa State 69-62 in Ames, Iowa on Wednesday.

The win was the fifth straight for the Panthers (6-1) overall and third consecutive at ISU's Hilton Coliseum.

Iowa State (5-2) led 54-52 with just over five minutes remaining when Sonnen hit two treys to put the Panthers ahead for good. Sonnen and Panther backup Matt Morrison, who finished with 14 points, provided a spark for UNI, which rallied from an early 10-point deficit.

Iowa State came into the game ranked third in the nation averaging almost 12 three-pointers per game, but it was UNI that enjoyed the upper hand from long distance, hitting nine treys while holding the Cyclones to a season-low four.

UNI came into the game allowing opponents only five treys per game and it held the Cyclones to just 22 percent (4-18).

Anthony James led the Panthers with a game-high 17 points while Seth Tuttle chipped in with nine points and a career-best 12 rebounds. Iowa State, which has now lost to intrastate rivals Northern Iowa and Drake, was led by Royce White and Chris Allen, who each scored 15 points.
