Twins Travis and David Wear combined for 18 points and 17 rebounds, and UCLA got its first Division I win of the season with a 62-39 victory over visiting Pepperdine on Monday.

The Bruins (2-4), who dropped their first two games of the season at the Los Angeles Sports Arena which will serve as their homecourt this season, led nearly all the way and built a 28-11 bulge at the half.

UCLA, whose football team fired coach Rick Neuheisel earlier in the day, hushed some of the rumors surrounding basketball coach Ben Howland’s tentative future with a suffocating defensive performance.

Neither team was sharp offensively, but Pepperdine had only 24 points in the first 28 minutes and trailed by 17 points.

The Waves (3-3) already had a Pac-12 victory over Arizona State this season but shot only 30 percent for the game.

Entering Monday, the Bruins’ only win of the season came against NAIA school Chaminade last week. But Lazeric Jones had 14 points and both Wears nearly notched double-doubles in the rout in front of a sparse crowd. Travis Wear had eight points and 10 rebounds, and David Wear had 10 points and seven rebounds.

Pepperdine was led by Corbin Moore and Joshua Lowery with nine points apiece.
