Evan Smotrycz and Stu Douglass each had 14 points as No. 18 Michigan overcame a sloppy first half to defeat Ferris State 59-33 Friday at Crisler Arena.

Michigan, which went 21-14 last year and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, led just 22-16 at the half against the Bulldogs, a Division II school from Big Rapids, Mich. The Wolverines went 4-of-17 on 3-point attempts in the opening half and shot 38.2 percent from the field overall.

It wasn’t until late in the second half that the Wolverines finally pulled away. After Jim Boylan’s jumper with 8:50 left got the Bulldogs within 38-32, Michigan responded with Smotrycz’s 3-pointer before using a 17-0 run to extend the lead to 55-32.

Tim Hardaway Jr., a sophomore guard, finished with 12 points on 4-of-13 shooting for the Wolverines, who won their ninth straight season opener. Douglass made an unexpected start at guard and converted 5 of 9 attempts, including three 3-pointers.

Daniel Sutherlin had a team-high 11 points and six rebounds for Ferris State, which went 24-8 last season but lost four of its top five scorers. The Bulldogs struggled offensively throughout, converting 31.8 percent of its field goals and turning the ball over 15 times.

Michigan held Ferris State without a field goal for the final 10 minutes.
