Jerai Grant had 22 points and eight rebounds, and Clemson won its first NCAA tournament game in 14 years with a 70-52 victory over Alabama-Birmingham on Tuesday in Dayton, Ohio.
Milton Jennings added 11 points, and Devin Booker and Tanner Smith scored 10 apiece for Clemson (22-11), which will meet No. 5 seed West Virginia in Thursday's second round.
Jamarr Sanders poured in a team-high 19 points for UAB (22-9).
Clemson raced to a 25-7 lead midway through the first half and left little doubt in the game which involved the final two at-large teams to receive NCAA bids. The Blazers never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.
The Tigers will have a quick turnaround. They were scheduled to leave Dayton at approximately 2 a.m. ET Wednesday morning and fly to Tampa, Fla. After a practice Wednesday, the Tigers will meet the Mountaineers Thursday in a 12:15 p.m. ET tip-off.
UAB senior guard Aaron Johnson sustained a broken leg late in the second half.
