Double-doubles from Marcus and Markieff Morris helped Kansas avoid the upset bug for the second straight game, as the third-ranked Jayhawks escaped Iowa State with an 84-79 win Wednesday in their Big 12 opener.

Marcus Morris scored 33 points and brought down 13 rebounds, and Markieff Morris added 17 and 11 for the Jayhawks (16-0, 1-0 Big 12), who needed overtime to escape with a 67-60 win over Michigan on Sunday. Josh Selby chipped in 14 points.

Iowa State (13-4, 0-2) came within 48-47 on a 3-pointer by Jamie Vanderbeken with 15:26 to go in the game. Selby then sank a 3-pointer, Marcus Morris followed with a free throw, and a Markieff Morris dunk and Marcus Morris basket gave Kansas a 56-47 lead with 13:14 to play. The closest Iowa State came after that was 68-65 with 7:22 to go.

Diante Garrett scored 27 points and dished off five assists for the Cyclones. Vanderbeken added 19 points and eight rebounds and Jake Anderson had 16 points.

Kansas hosts Nebraska on Saturday, and Iowa State entertains Baylor.
