Reggie Johnson scored 21 points and Malcolm Grant added 17, leading Miami (Fla.) to a 69-61 win over Akron in the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic on Thursday. Miami (10-3) won all three games in the tournament, including victories over Oral Roberts and Rice.

Akron (7-5) opened the tournament with victories over Arkansas-Little Rock and Stetson, but were no match for the Hurricanes, who led the entire game. Miami jumped ahead 11-4 and built the lead to 29-11 midway through the first half. The Hurricanes were on top 38-22 at halftime. Miami led 57-35 before Akron mounted a comeback by scoring 16 unanswered points.

Brett McKnight's 3-pointer cut the lead to 57-51 with 5:21 to play, but the Hurricanes managed to regain control.

McKnight came off the bench to lead Akron with 20 points. Brett McClanahan scored 11 points while Nikola Cvetinovic scored 10. Durant Scott scored 12 points for Miami.
