Trey Thompkins and Dustin Ware scored 21 points apiece as Georgia edged rival Georgia Tech, 73-72, on Tuesday. Iman Shumpert scored 18 points and Glen Rice Jr. added 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Yellow Jackets, who have dropped three straight.

Georgia Tech (4-4) took a 35-29 edge into the half and held it until Thompkins hit a pair of free throws for Georgia to knot it at 43-43 with 13:30 to play. The Bulldogs began to edge ahead from there and led by as much as 63-57 with under eight minutes left before the Yellow Jackets made their move, re-taking the lead on Rice’s layup with just over four minutes on the clock.

It wasn’t until Ware drained a 3-pointer with 18 seconds remaining that Georgia got the lead back, 73-70, and held on.

The Bulldogs (6-2) do not face another major-conference team until SEC play begins on January 8 with No. 16 Kentucky. Stretching their record to 11-2 before conference play could do wonders for their hopes of an NCAA Tournament berth in March, with a tough slate in the SEC likely holding them to 20 wins or below at the end of the regular season.
