Travis McKie had a game-high 21 points and eight rebounds, and Wake Forest held off a second-half charge from Hampton for a 63-56 home victory in the opening round of the preseason NIT on Monday.

The Demon Deacons (1-1) were up 34-23 at halftime and led by as many as 15 in the second half, but the Pirates closed the gap to within three.

Hampton (0-1) had a chance to tie it in the final minute, but Darrion Pellum's 3-pointer misfired, and Wake Forest's Ari Stewart hit two free throws with 12 seconds left to seal the win.

C.J. Harris added 13 points for Wake Forest, which avoided back-to-back home losses to start the season after losing to Stetson on Friday.

Pellum had 15 points and six rebounds for Hampton, and Funches Charles added 14 points and 10 boards.
