Andrew Fitzgerald scored 22 points to lead Oklahoma to a 77-57 victory over Coppin State in the season opener for both teams on Friday.

A sophomore forward, Fitzgerald was 8-of-13 from the field and 6-of-8 from the line for the Sooners, who led 36-27 at the half and pulled away over the final 20 minutes.

Calvin Newell and Steven Pledger scored 13 points and Cameron Clark had 11 for Oklahoma, which got only one field goal and eight total points from Cade Davis, the lone returning starter for coach Jeff Capel’s club.

The Eagles, who were picked to finish 10th in the MEAC after last season’s 8-22 campaign, hung tough for awhile and trailed only 23-19 with about eight minutes left in the first half.

The Sooners (1-0) lost their top four scorers and top three rebounders from last season, but executed well on the offensive end. Oklahoma shot 52 percent from the field (25-of-48) and made 9-of-22 three-pointers (41 percent).

Coppin State was led by Michael Harper, who was 7-of-13 from the field and finished with 17 points.

Aside from Harper, the Eagles had a tough night shooting, going 20-of-58 (35 percent) from the field.
