No. 25 Texas showed off its talented, young nucleus in an 83-52 opening romp over Navy, Monday in the 2K Sports Classic/Coaches vs. Cancer in Austin, Texas.

Sophomore Jordan Hamilton led all scorers with 26 points. He added 10 rebounds for his second career double-double. Prized freshman Tristan Thompson had a solid debut for the Longhorns (1-0), with 13 points and seven rebounds.

Gary Johnson added 15 points and 10 rebounds for Texas, which won its first 17 games last season and climbed to No. 1 in the rankings, before going on an epic slide in the second half of the season and getting knocked out of the NCAA Tournament in the first round.

Those late struggles appeared to have carried over to this season early on against Navy. Texas led by only four with five minutes to play in the first half, but turned up the defense and pulled away from the overmatched Midshipmen in the second half. The bigger, more-athletic Longhorns pestered Navy into 16 turnovers and dominated the glass, outrebounding the Midshipmen 45-26.

Texas continues play in the 2K Sports Classic against Louisiana Tech Wednesday. Navy will attempt to bounce back Sunday at Buffalo.
