Ja'Kobi Gillespie scored 26 points and dished out seven assists Sunday as No. 25 Maryland overcame a halftime deficit to annihilate visiting Iowa 101-75 in a Big Ten Conference matchup in College Park, Md.
All five Terrapin starters scored in double figures for the second straight game and the fifth time this season. Derik Queen added 18 points and 13 rebounds for his third consecutive double-double, while Rodney Rice also tallied 18 points. Selton Miguel drilled 5 of 9 3-pointers and finished with 17 points and five assists, while Julian Reese chipped in a 16-point, 12-rebound double-double.
Maryland (20-6, 10-5 Big Ten) made 58.2 percent of its shots for the game, including 22 of 37 in the second half, and was 12 of 26 on 3-pointers (46.2 percent). It owned the boards 40-28.
Pryce Sandfort scored 15 points off the bench for the Hawkeyes (14-11, 5-9), while Payton Sandfort added 14 points and 10 rebounds. Seydou Traore chipped in 14 points but it wasn't enough as Iowa was buried 54-24 in the second half.
Trailing by four points at the break, the Terps wasted little time taking control. Rice rattled off eight straight points in the first 1:36, including a pair of 3-pointers, that gave them the lead for good.
Gillespie stole the ball and scored to make the lead 10 at the 14:33 mark. From there, the advantage kept growing. It got to 21 on Miguel's layup with 8:52 remaining and reached 31 on Gillespie's layup with 2:02 remaining that pushed Maryland into triple figures.
It was a far cry from the first half, when both teams scored seemingly at will. The Hawkeyes made 20 of 35 shots from the field and 8 of 14 on 3-pointers, while the Terps were 17 of 30 from the floor and 8 of 13 on 3-pointers.
The difference was that Maryland was sloppy with the ball, committing 11 turnovers that Iowa cashed in for a whopping 23 points. The last two of those came on Even Brauns' dunk with 37 seconds left that helped the Hawkeyes reach halftime with a 51-47 advantage.
