Heat 100, Lakers 94: Dwyane Wade scored 25 points and Hassan Whiteside grabbed a career-high 25 rebounds as Miami held off visiting Los Angeles to maintain seventh place in the Eastern Conference.
Goran Dragic added 21 points and matched Wade with six assists and Whiteside contributed 18 points and four blocks for the Heat, who finished 33-for-43 from the free throw line compared to 11-of-17 for the Lakers. Luol Deng added 15 points and Henry Walker led the Heat reserves with eight points.
Ed Davis had 14 points and 12 rebounds and fellow reserve Jordan Hill finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds for Los Angeles. Wayne Ellington had 14 points and Carlos Boozer scored 13 to pace the starters.
The 500th 3-pointer of Dragic’s career gave the Heat a 90-88 lead with 3:19 left in the game and Wade underhanded a lob pass to set up Whiteside’s dunk with just under a minute left to expand the advantage to 95-92. Whiteside scored again on the interior with 21.3 seconds on the clock to keep the lead at three and he made 3-of-4 free throws in the final 15.6 seconds to seal the win.
The Heat took the first double-digit lead of the game when Walker sank a high-arcing 3-pointer for a 70-60 advantage with 3:03 remaining in the third quarter. The Lakers came back with an 8-0 run and stayed within three heading into the fourth before tying the score for the seventh time at 78 with 10:49 left in the game.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Heat improved to 3-8 at home against the Western Conference this season after finishing 11-4 last season. …. 11 players for the Lakers have started at least 16 games this season and Hill, a non-starter against Miami, leads the team with 48 starts. ….
