Rockets 113, Timberwolves 102: James Harden notched his second triple-double of the season and the fourth of his career as host Houston held off Minnesota.
Harden collected 31 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists and tied his career high with four blocks for the Rockets, who were without point guard Patrick Beverley because of flu-like symptoms. Josh Smith added 17 points off the bench and Terrence Jones tallied 15 points and a season-high 15 rebounds for Houston, which has won four straight home games against Minnesota.
Star rookie Andrew Wiggins scored 30 points on his 20th birthday and Kevin Martin added 21 to lead the Timberwolves, who shot 33.3 percent from the field and were 5-for-18 from 3-point range. Nikola Pekovic collected 16 points and 13 rebounds, Ricky Rubio tallied 14 points, nine rebounds and seven assists and Adreian Payne registered season highs of 11 points and 10 rebounds in his first career start for Minnesota.
Minnesota shot 13.3 percent in the third quarter — the lowest for a Rockets opponent in any quarter this season — but managed to get to the foul line enough to stay in it, trailing 84-75 heading to the fourth. Houston pushed the lead to 14 early in the final period, but the Timberwolves pulled within one with 3:20 left before Jones and Harden took over in the final minutes to help the Rockets seal it.
The Timberwolves led by as many as seven points early, but Houston surged ahead 26-25 after one quarter and scored the first six points of the second. Minnesota answered with a 9-0 spurt to regain the advantage, and the lead went back and forth until Harden's 3-pointer at the buzzer tied it at 56 at the break.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Harden surpassed 1,500 points in the Rockets' 56th game of the season, the fewest for a Houston player since Hakeem Olajuwon reached the mark in 53 games in 1994-95. … Harden is the first Houston player with multiple triple-doubles in a season since Steve Francis in 2001-02. … Wiggins' 18 games with 20 or more points are more than all other NBA rookies combined.
