Dirk Nowitzki tallied 15 points and a season-high 14 rebounds for the Mavericks, who have won 23 of the last 26 meetings in Dallas, including nine in a row. Bernard James added nine points off the bench and Monta Ellis had a season-high seven steals for Dallas, which was without center Tyson Chandler (ankle) and point guard Rajon Rondo (facial fractures).

Trey Burke scored 16 points in a reserve role to lead the Jazz, who were denied their first three-game winning streak of the season. Derrick Favors scored 14 points and Gordon Hayward finished with 12 points, nine rebounds and eight assists for Utah.

The Mavericks trailed early in the third quarter but surged ahead as Barea scored 15 points in the period and Dallas took a 64-57 lead to the fourth quarter. Nowitzki's three-point play made it a 10-point game with 4:15 to play, but the Jazz hung around and got a three-point play from Favors and a steal and dunk from Hayward to get within 83-82 before Ellis hit a pair of free throws and came up with a steal to seal it.

The Jazz went 4-of-20 from the field in the first quarter and Charlie Villanueva hit back-to-back 3-pointers to close the period and give Dallas a 22-9 lead. Elijah Millsap scored eight of his 10 points in the second quarter to help Utah pull within 39-37 at the break.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Utah's nine points in the first quarter marked the fewest Dallas has allowed in any quarter this season. … Dallas, which has 10-of-28 from 3-point range, has made at least 10 triples in nine straight games and is 23-6 when doing so. … Ellis played through a hip injury to extend his consecutive games streak to 219 but was limited to seven points on 1-of-6 shooting.
