Spurs 101, Mavericks 100: Tony Parker scored 23 points and Manu Ginobili added 20 off the bench as San Antonio began its title defense by edging visiting Dallas.

Tim Duncan collected 14 points and 13 rebounds while Marco Belinelli scored 15 points for the Spurs, who received their championship rings and raised the banner in a pregame ceremony. Parker, Belinelli and Danny Green combined to go 10-of 16 from beyond the arc, including Parker’s go-ahead 3-pointer, as San Antonio shot 50 percent from 3-point range.

Monta Ellis recorded 26 points and six assists and Dirk Nowitzki scored 18 to lead the Mavericks. Devin Harris scored 17 points off the bench and Tyson Chandler grabbed 10 rebounds for Dallas, which fell despite forcing 21 turnovers.

The Mavericks trailed 91-81 after Duncan’s short jumper with 6:31 left but Harris hit a pair of 3-pointers and Chandler Parsons knocked down another before Nowitzki’s jumper capped a surge and gave Dallas a 100-98 lead with 1:28 remaining. Parker responded with a 3-pointer to put the Spurs back in front, and Parsons came up short on a 3-point attempt from the right wing in the final seconds before a desperation heave was off the mark.

The Mavericks took a 53-45 lead into the half and pushed the advantage to 10 points early in the third before Parker and Belinelli scored five points apiece during a 15-2 run that put the Spurs up 60-57. Dallas battled back and held a 73-72 advantage with 1:43 left in the third before San Antonio bridged the third and fourth quarters with a 14-4 run to grab a nine-point lead with 9:03 to play.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Spurs assistant Becky Hammon became the first full-time female coach in any of the four major North American sports. … Chandler and Nowitzki both drew technical fouls for protesting calls in the third quarter after each was called for a personal foul while getting tangled up with Duncan. … Parsons went 2-of-10 from the field in his first game since signing a three-year, $46 million deal with Dallas in the offseason.
