Wizards 117, Nuggets 115 (OT): Kris Humphries scored a season-high 21 points off the bench and grabbed 14 rebounds as visiting Washington survived against Denver.
John Wall added 19 points and 16 assists and Paul Pierce scored nine of his 19 points in the third quarter for the Wizards, who moved into sole possession of second place in the Eastern Conference. Bradley Beal added 14 points before fouling out in the final seconds of regulation and Nene also scored 14 for Washington, which shot 53.3 percent from the floor.
Ty Lawson returned after sitting out Friday’s one-point loss to the Boston Celtics following a charge of driving under the influence and finished with 31 points and 12 assists but missed an open 13-footer at the end of overtime after stealing the inbounds pass. Wilson Chandler added 20 points and nine rebounds and Darrell Arthur led the Denver reserves with 12 points.
The Nuggets missed eight straight shots bridging the end of regulation and the start of overtime before Arthur and Lawson sank back-to-back jumpers to pull Denver back within one with 1:28 left in overtime. Washington went back up by five with 10 seconds left in overtime, Chandler buried a 3 on the other end with three seconds on the clock, but Lawson couldn’t take advantage of his ensuing steal.
Kenneth Faried had a chance to win the game in regulation but missed two free throws with 1.4 seconds on the clock before coming back to block Pierce’s fall-away jumper at the buzzer, sending the game into overtime. Beal fouled out on the play that led to Nene’s late free throws, leaving the Wizards without their second-leading scorer for the overtime.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Wizards outscored the Nuggets in the second and third quarters, the first time in the last eight games they have outscored the opposition in back-to-back quarters. … Humphries has scored at least 20 points twice this season and both games came against the Nuggets. … Denver C Jusuf Nurkic had three fouls in the first seven minutes of the game before finishing with six points and nine rebounds in 19 minutes.
