Pistons 128, Magic 118: Brandon Jennings recorded 24 points and a career-high 21 assists while Andre Drummond scored 26 to go along with 17 rebounds as Detroit held off a late rally by visiting Orlando.
Greg Monroe contributed 20 of his 24 points in the first half and added 10 rebounds as the Pistons notched a season high in scoring while winning for the 12th time in 15 games. Kyle Singler had four 3-pointers en route to 14 points and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored 10 for Detroit, which made 10-of-24 from behind the arc.
Nikola Vucevic led the way with 26 points and 15 rebounds while Victor Oladipo scored 23 as the Magic lost for the ninth time in 11 games. Tobias Harris scored 19 after missing the last five games with an ankle injury, Evan Fournier had 14 points and Kyle O’Quinn added 12 for Orlando.
Jennings dished out six assists and drained a 3-pointer as the Pistons built an 11-point advantage before the midway point of the first quarter. The Magic closed the gap to six with 2:48 left in the second after two straight Oladipo baskets, but Detroit answered with 13 of the final 15 points – eight by Monroe – for a 65-48 lead at intermission.
Harris scored five late in the third quarter to pull Orlando within a dozen and the Magic ran off 12 of the first 14 in the fourth to cut the deficit to 98-96. The Pistons led 102-100 before running off 14 of the next 16 – ignited with two baskets by Jennings and highlighted by 3-pointers from Anthony Tolliver and Jodie Meeks – for a 116-102 lead with 3:31 left.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Detroit’s 35 points in the first quarter and 65 at halftime were also season highs. … O’Quinn scored in double figures for the first time in 14 games and blocked three shots. … Jennings’ previous high was 19 assists against Toronto on March 2, 2013 while with Milwaukee, and the 21-year-old Drummond had three blocks to reach 300 in his career.
