Albert Pujols hit the 673rd home run of his major-league career and the Los Angeles Dodgers held on to complete a three-game sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-8 on Sunday afternoon in Phoenix.
Pujols had two hits and three RBIs, A.J. Pollock had three hits and three RBIs, while Chris Taylor and Justin Turner also had two hits each for the Dodgers, who remain 1 1/2 games behind the San Francisco for the National League West lead.
Dodgers starter Tony Gonsolin went 3 2/3 innings, allowing one run and three hits. He struck out two and didn't walk a batter in his third start this season.
Garrett Cleavinger (2-3) threw 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief before Arizona hammered the Dodgers' bullpen in the later innings, scoring six runs in the eighth inning to make it a one-run game.
Kenley Jansen pitched the ninth for his 18th save.
Josh Reddick had three hits and three RBIs and Ketel Marte had three hits, two RBIs and three runs scored for Arizona, which has lost 17 in a row.
Diamondbacks starter Alex Young (2-5) gave up five runs and seven hits in three innings. He struck out three and walked two.
Following an RBI single by Turner for a 1-0 lead in the third inning, Pujols blasted a three-run homer -- his 11th of the season -- to make it 4-0.
A walk to Andy Burns brought Steven Souza Jr. to the plate and he laced a triple to deep right to drive in Burns for a 5-0 lead.
Corbin Martin replaced Young to start the fourth and he was greeted by a double from Gonsolin, his first career extra-base hit. After a bunt single by Taylor, Pollock cleared the bases with a two-run double to make it 7-0.
The Diamondbacks scored a run in the fourth when Marte doubled to lead off the inning and came home on a single by Eduardo Escobar to make it 7-1.
The Dodgers continued to put runs on the board, however, scoring two more in the fifth to move ahead 9-1.
The Diamondbacks put a scare in the Dodgers in the eighth.
Reddick and Marte highlighted the late rally as each delivered two-run singles to make it 9-8 before Josh Rojas grounded out to end the inning.
