Phillies 6, Marlins 5: Jimmy Rollins hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the fifth inning and Jonathan Papelbon held on in the ninth as visiting Philadelphia won its third straight game.
John Mayberry Jr. also drove in two runs for the Phillies, who roughed up Marlins starter Anthony DeSclafani after the rookie right-hander had defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers with six strong innings in his major league debut. DeSclafani (1-1) was charged with five runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings while A.J. Burnett (3-3) earned the win despite lasting just five innings, during which he allowed three runs, three hits and four walks.
Ryan Howard and Marlon Byrd drove in first-inning runs for Philadelphia while Papelbon survived the ninth for his 12th consecutive save. Garrett Jones had two singles and two doubles for the Marlins, who fell to 17-6 at home.
The teams exchanged two-run rallies in the first before Jones' double plated Giancarlo Stanton with a go-ahead run in the third. The lead shifted back to the Phillies when Burnett delivered a one-out double in the fifth and scored one batter later when Rollins hammered a 3-1 offering from DeSclafani a few rows into the right-field seats.
With two outs in the sixth, the Marlins opted to intentionally walk Tony Gwynn Jr. to load the bases for Mayberry, who grounded a two-run single through the left side to make it 6-3. Miami got a run back in the eighth on Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s RBI single and scored another in the ninth when Jones blooped a two-out RBI single against Papelbon, but the Philadelphia closer recovered to retire Saltalamacchia on a fly ball to end it.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Marlins manager Mike Redmond was ejected in the sixth for arguing balls and strikes. His shouting match with plate umpire Will Little included a display of dirt kicking around the batter's box. ... Phillies LH Cliff Lee underwent an MRI on his left elbow on Tuesday after pitching through "some elbow tenderness" for the last three weeks, according to general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. The results of the MRI were not immediately disclosed. ... Papelbon had not allowed a run since April 2.
